
Society of Merchant Venturers
Trustee of the Cote Charity.
Established under Royal Charter in 1552, the men and women of the Society of Merchant Venturers work with and support people and communities from the wider Bristol area, primarily through education, care for older people, charitable giving and social enterprise.
The Society is currently educating over 4,000 children in nine schools; together with the St Monica Trust, supports over 5,000 older people; makes charitable grants to around 100 local causes every year; actively supports social enterprise initiatives; administers a wide range of trusts and grants; and with the City Council, is responsible for the stewardship of the Clifton and Durdham Downs.

Almshouses
The Society's involvement with Bristol's Almshouses dates back over 300 years, when it became Trustee of the Almshouses on St Michael's Hill, built in 1691. This Grade 1 listed building has been refurbished in order to provide sheltered accommodation for residents in 12 comfortable flats with an onsite laundry, communal lounge, common room and chapel.

The Care Quality Commission recently inspected Katherine House and found us to be compliant in all areas, awarding us, in August 2019, with a 'GOOD' CQC care rating in Safe, Effective, Caring and Well led, and OUTSTANDING in Responsive.
